"Moving Abstractions" zeigt eine Reihe experimenteller Filme Berliner und internationaler Künstler. Die Filme arbeiten mit Abstraktionen, in dem Sinne, dass sie keine Story erzählen, oder kein dokumentarisches Anliegen verfolgen. Dennoch sind die Bilder keine ungegenständliche Lichtmalerei.

Filmbilder auf der Leinwand, zumeist im fotografischen Prozess oder mit digitalen oder analogen Mitteln aufgezeichnet, sind eigentlich Oberflächen ohne räumliche Tiefe. Die fotografischen Bilder erzeugen jedoch nicht nur symbolische Oberflächen, sondern die Illusion von räumlicher Tiefe und Textur. Textur und Struktur haben im bewegten Bild eine umso größere Bedeutung, wenn die "Filmerzählung" nicht durch einen Plot zusammengehalten wird, sondern durch Bewegung der Kamera, durch assoziative Montage, schnelle Bildabfolge oder durch Bildüberlagerungen und Verfremdungen. Die Bilder erzeugen Assoziationsräume, und die Filmerzählung wird durch die Zuschauer selbst hergestellt, durch die Verknüpfung der Bilder. Abstrakter oder struktureller Film kann dabei ebenso einen Assoziationsrahmen ergeben, wie die eigene bildhafte Erinnerung.

Zwei (oder drei) der Filme bieten einen solchen Raum der Referenz an frühe abstrakte Filmwerke: "Back ande Vor" von Deborah Uhde und John D'Arcy und "After Synchromy" von Mark Street. Aber alle Filme erzeugen ihre eigene, fluide Realität, die nicht unverbunden zur Wirklichkeit steht.

"Abstractions" presents a program of experimental film by Berlin and international artists. The films use abstractions of the “real", which means they do not tell a fictive or documentary narration. Neither are they non-figurative film paintings.

Film images on a screen, mostly created by digital or analogue means, are flat surfaces without depth, physically speaking. However, the photographic images do not just evoke symbolic interfaces, but an illusion of texture and tactility. This quality of the surface becomes even more evident, if there is no rigid plot establishing the structure of a storyline, but a fabric created by camera movements, associative montage, fast image sequences, or compositing and alteration. The image sequences generate realms of associations, and the viewer conceives the narration in their cognition of film as an audio-visual totality.

As in the examples of the works “Back ande Vor" by Deborah Uhde and John D'Arcy, and “After Synchromy" by Mark Street, abstract or structural cinema may be a point of reference, but not neccesarily for the other works shown in the program. The films create their own fluid reality, connected with open references to reality, culture or politics.

Ein experimenteller Footage-Film, der mit bunten Formen und Farben das Gedicht von Ann Cotten aufgreift, um es im selben Moment zu kontrastieren. Wettbewerbsbeitrag für Poetry Award Berlin.

An experimental found footage film. Colors, forms and montage are associative interpretations of the Poem by Ann Cotten. It was conceived as a contribution to the Poetry Award Berlin.

Luminous is from an ongoing body of work exploring the manipulation and abstraction of time, view, movement, scale & sound on objects that emanate light. Concept, shot, edit by Matthew Pell. Sound design by Sebastian Buccheri.

Luminous ist Teil einer Filmserie in progress, die Manipulation und Abstraktion von Zeit, Wahrnehmung, Bewegung, Maßstab und Ton von Objekten behandelt, die Licht ausstrahlen. Mit dem Sound Design von Sebastian Buccheri.

Eine Abstraktion der bewegten Wirklichkeit aus s/w Super8, 16mm Found Footage & Mini DV - während der Montage konkretisierte sich eine eigene Form der rhythmischen Bild-Strukturen zu neuen filmischen Wahrnehmungs- und Realitätsebenen - was ich sehe ist nicht was ich höre.

Xarussell is a mixture of 8mm, 16mm Found Footage & DV Media - during the editing process arose a new form and cinematic image structure with different levels of perception & realities - an abstract visual & audio composition about rhythm & movement - what I see is not what I hear.

"[...] with Bildmaschine 07 [...], the artist is no longer moving between the media of sculpture, photography, painting, film and theatre, he is also creating a bridge from 20th century machine art to current contemporary art where the borders between man and machine have become more fluid. Following the example of "classic" machine art such as Jean Tinguely or Rebecca Horn, in his Bildmaschine Fürtler similary delegates the act of creation to the technology but intervenes as a stage desinger: as they travel through the endless loops of the pure motorway architecture devoid of people and vegetation, the lorries equipped with LED lights cast moving shadows on the wall. They bring a very dramatic moment into play, reminiscent not only of historic galanty shows and shadow theatre, but also of kinetic and film experiments dating back to the early years of moving picture." The Background World is an immersive, organic and pulsating environment. It is composed of vivid digital mandalas bringing us on a psychedelic journey through layers of earthly and submarine landscapes. By distorting biological life and transforming it into an unconscious digital place, this work encourages us to observe and experience the world from an inner perspective.

A meeting point. A missing point. A conversation at the border of languages. Deborah Uhde's special focus is set on experimental and documentaristic films, as well as on situative formats like installation or performance.

After Synchromy is an adaptation of and homage to Norman McLaren's film from 1971, Synchromy (link). The film starts with a digital remake of McLaren's film, but then combines it with pictures from the street that have a similar or a contrasting abstract quality. The combination of non-representational images with street photographs that have an abstract quality seem to give an ironic, humorous comment to both traditions without becoming parody.

Beim Filmscreening in der Galerie Nord am 5. März 2020 um 19:00 Uhr erwarten wir Deborah Phillips als Special Guest mit 16mm Film und Liveperformance mit Film...

Tornasolada Sororidad Dada bedeutet, wortwörtlich das Schimmern von Perlmutt, Solidarität in der weiblichen Form, aber auch Dada wie Dadaismus. All diese Ideen kamen zusammen, um unsere Kollaboration (Melina Pafundi & Deborah S. Phillips), gemischt mit Entwicklungschemikalien und Filmkopierprozessen, prozesshaft in Bewegung zu setzen. Daraus entstand ein leuchtend gelbes Werk.

Tornasolada Sororidad Dada can be translated as mother of pearl irridescence, solidarity in female form and giving or also Dada as in Dadaism. These ideas were mixed together as a basis for our collaboration (Melina Pafundi & Deborah S. Phillips) and were then mixed with film developing chemicals and printing processes. The result is a luminous yellow work of art.

Aus einer 16mm-Projektion mit ein oder zwei Diaprojektoren kommen leuchtende Blautöne... Ein Tryptichon aus Licht in Blau.
