Tonight, we will experience two very different aspects of Australian culture: Art meets science in the works of Chris Henschke and Donna Kendrigan, Australian artists from Melbourne. Donna recreated the first metereological cloud formation experiment in front of her camera. Chris inserted a lightbulb into the beams of a particle accelerator during his residency at the Australian Synchrotron, and documented the effects. The results of these experiments will be presented at the screening. However, Donna and Chris also have a very different interest. This will be shown in the second part of the night.

"Deep South" is a montage of shorts and features from the southern end of the Australian continent. A selection of degenerate yet distinctive moments in Australian film starting from 1906, paints an unashamedly unglamorous and unfamiliar portrait of Australia for the European audience - a new anti-touristic angle on Australia as opposed to the usual image of a fun and friendly holiday destination.

The artists are personally introducing the films and will be present for Q&A after the screening.

An diesem Abend präsentieren wir zwei gegensätzliche Aspekte australischer Kultur: Kunst trifft auf Wissenschaft in den Arbeiten der beiden Künstler Donna Kendrigan und Chris Henschke aus Melbourne. Donna rekonstruierte für die Kamera die ersten metereologischen Experimente zur Wolkenformung und Chris führt als künstlerische Experiment eine Glühbirne in den Strahl des Partikelbeschleunigers ein, als er am Australischen Synchrontron als Artist-in-Residence arbeitete, und er dokumentierte die Effekte und die Arbeit am Synchrotron. An diesem Abend werden wir nicht nur diese Ergebnisse auf der Leinwand betrachten können. Donna und Chris haben noch eine ganz andere Leidenschaft, und diese wird die Präsentation im zweiten Teil des Abends bestimmen.

“Deep South" ist eine Montage aus Features und Kurzfilmen vom südlichen Ende des Australienkontinents. Diese szenische Auswahl aus seit 1906 (z.B. der früheste belegte Feature-Film) entstandenen Filmen fügt dekadente bis distinkte Momente des australischen Films zusammen und malt ein unbeschämtes, unglamouröses Bild für den europäischen Betrachter - ein anti-touristischer Blick auf das sonst von Spaß und Urlaubsfreundlichkeit bestimmte Bild Australiens.

Die Künstler führen selbst in die Filme ein und diskutieren auch gerne über die gezeigten Arbeiten und die Filmmontage.
